Have you ever been completely certain you understood something, only to discover later that you were seeing only part of the picture?
In Mark 8:22–38, Jesus heals a blind man in two stages. After the first touch, the man can see, but everything is still blurry. He sees people who look like trees walking. After Jesus touches him again, he can finally see clearly.
This unusual miracle becomes a picture of the disciples—and of us.
Peter correctly declares that Jesus is the Messiah, but he still does not fully understand what kind of Messiah Jesus came to be. Peter wants victory without suffering, a crown without a cross, and glory without sacrifice.
Jesus lovingly corrects him and teaches that truly following Him means more than knowing the right words. It means surrendering control, denying the part of ourselves that insists on being king, taking up our cross, and walking behind Jesus.
We may know that God loves us, yet still wonder if we have failed Him. We may believe He is in control, yet still panic about tomorrow. We may know we are forgiven, yet continue carrying shame.
We are not completely blind, but sometimes our spiritual vision is still blurry.
The good news is that Jesus does not give up on people who cannot see clearly. He patiently keeps opening our eyes and helping us understand who He truly is.
The question Jesus asked His disciples is still the question He asks each of us today:
**“Who do you say that I am?”**
The clearer we see Jesus, the less we will want Him to become like us—and the more we will long to become like Him.
